Chapter Report Preview

To say the least the chapter has made significant strides towards the future. Over the course of this semester, the chapter has strengthened our alumni relations chair. In addition, the chapter’s service efforts have not been lacking. Members of the chapter have participated in local projects such as Big Brothers Big Sisters and a mentoring program at the local junior high school. The chapter can also be seen participating in campus sponsored mission trips and working at local soup kitchens.
The chapter has continued our growing “youth movement” and is proud to announce the addition of three new men with many showing interest in the chapter. Furthermore, the chapter has been very active around campus with three varsity athletes and many intramural participants. In fact, the chapter has had participants in all of the available intramurals this semester. The chapter also can also been seen around campus with many participants in Mock Trial, Resident Life, Orientation Team, Student Senate, the Student Programming Board, and writers for the school paper The Falcon.

Information on House Situation

Brothers,

Today I had a meeting with our Greek Advisor, Crystal Sutter, and she has informed me that our Shelter House is deemed unsafe to live in. The head of maintenence informed her that the floors near the stairs going into the basement and the slant in the floor of the Brotherhood Lounge would need to be raised on jacks to keep them safe. If QU has enough money they will be adding our House to the list to be torn down over the summer of 2010. Now I don't know if they are doing this to save money over repairs or if it really is unsafe.

The school is offering two new potential house to be our new Shelter House. The corner house on Senior Row, the one closet to 20th St, the old Alpha Delta Gamma house to you older brothers (this would keep us close to the other Greek houses) or 915 N. 18th St., it is the blue house across from the brick houses. The blue house is the bigger of the two I believe.

In regards to the murals and class projects. It was recommended that we take photos of them to transfer to the new house or we blow them up and frame them. If some of the murals could be cut from the wall, we could frame those and keep a little bit of the old house with us.

For the members that will be here next year, you can take a straw pole and we can suggest which house we want and the QU administration will take that into consideration.

If you have any questions, please let me know so I can bring them up with Crystal at our next meeting.

Fraternally,
Mark Webb
Chapter President

Message From Him: I am one of the members as well as a member of the Chicago Alumni Chapter. We put together different events (St. Pats parties, golf outings, etc.) and work with the school on future events. The board and, namely, the chapters are getting older and out of touch with the new grads. We want to connect more with the new guys/gals, so if you could, please let the alumni know about it. Chapters have meetings every couple months to get new information and plan future events. Delts can contact me via. e-mail if they want to get in touch with their chapters (Chicago, St. Louis, Quincy) and I'll let them know current info. You can contact him at tr_barry@comcast.net

Meet the Chapter: Five Minutes w/Dan LaRocco, (Secretary, Parliamentarian, and Asst. Alumni Chairman)

Pictured to Right: Dan LaRocco at the Sailing Leadership Academy.

Hi my name is Dan LaRocco. I am currently a sophomore member of the Sigma class and am the youngest member out of the group. Most of my life I bounced around place to place so really I don’t claim anywhere as my “hometown”. I serve the chapter as secretary, parliamentarian, and do work with the alumni committee. Most of the work is working on the blog, but I have also helped with the previous newsletter. I was initiated in the fall of 08’ and have high hopes for the future of this chapter. Just a little background about me I am a graduate of Normal Community High School where I was a wrestler and a runner for the Track and Field team. I had previous leadership role through such experiences. Coming into college I had pretty much little in mind where I would get involved, and along comes Delta Tau Delta. If you would have told me two year ago I would be in a fraternity and serve on the executive board I would look at you like you were crazy, but found that the stereotypes were wrong, and found a great group of guys. Then again I would not have imagined myself being engage by my sophomore year either, but you never know what life will throw at you, but so far life is treating me well. I take pride in calling myself a Delt, and feel I have taken the bull by the horns. I would say I have a very active role within the chapter, and I also attend the Sailing Leadership Academy this past June. An amazing experience that I hope other brothers will embark on. I hope that I can be a key factor to keeping this chapter on path to a successful future.

45 Lessons of Life per Road Blog

Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old,

The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me.. It is the most-requested column I've ever written."

My odometer rolled over to 90 last August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it...

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood... But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30... Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42. The best is yet to come.

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."

Chapter Welcomes 8

Another year, another Rush. The chapter after its recent Rush has offered 8 men the opportunity to become one of us. The group will make up the Upsilon class. Taking the journey to become a Delt are the following Manuel Yu, Gavin Mueller, Chad Kallal, John Piontek, Luke Weaver, Matt Seago, Matt McClure, and Eric Klienschnittger. The chapter is very optimistic about this class. The group entails three Sophomores, and five freshman. We hope that these men will take life as a Delt seriously and join the youthful chapter on moving towards the future.

Setting the Barr of Risk Management

With the recent changes of office current Risk Management Chairman Kevin Hahn was elected to be the chapter Vice President. Adam Barr has been elected as the chapters new Risk Management Chairman. Barr is a member of the Tau class which was initiated in the Spring. Barr is currently a Sophomore and is embracing the opportunity to contribute to the chapter. Barr will hold this position until December where the chapter will hold our annual elections.

Taking Out the Trash

Well not so much, but the chapter has recently joined the campuses effort to promote recycling around campus. There will be large white boxes around campus for QU Student to place plastic bottles, paper, cardboard and aluminum cans in. Every Thursday the chapter will have groups of about five go around campus and change the bags and ensure the full bags go to the proper location. The idea was brought to the chapter by alumni Kyle Leonard who was working on the same project last year.

Heres a few stats on recycling:

  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a 100-watt bulb for 20 hours, a computer for 3 hours, or a TV for 2 hours. (EPA, 2008)
  • Americans go through 25 billion plastic bottles every year
  • More than 50% of a new aluminum can is made from recycled aluminum.
  • The 36 billion aluminum cans landfilled last year had a scrap value of more than $600 million.
  • An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now!
  • Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an incinerator.
  • Each of us uses approximately one 100-foot-tall Douglas fir tree in paper and wood products per year. (EPA, 2008)
  • More than 400 paper mills in the United States use at least some recovered materials in their manufacturing processes, and more than 200 of those mills use recovered fiber exclusively. (EPA, 2008)
  • Recycling paper instead of making it from new material generates 74 percent less air pollution and uses 50 percent less water. (EPA, 2008)

Motivational Video

Since about July I have been a constant follower of The Road Blog which is a side blog for the Fraternity. The Road give Delts over the country lessons on how to grow in life. One video stood out to me the other day while browsing through during my free time at work. Its a motivational video that shows perseverance always pays off, and when life gets you down get back up.

Letter From University

May 8, 2009

To the men of the Iota Delta Chapter of Delta Tau Delta:

As you are well aware, you were placed on probation with Quincy University on March 13, 2009 and were given specific stipulations to follow while you were under this probationary status. Since you have been on probation, you have shown more fiscal responsibility by doing a fundraiser and getting dues from members of the fraternity. However, there still seems to be some disorganization with the fraternity.

After numerous requests for community service hour reports, I still haven’t received the completed community service hour reports from March or April. Also, the lack of judgment that the fraternity showed on Sunday, April 26, 2009 is an indication that disorganization and lack of maturity still exist among the leadership of the fraternity. By choosing to have a party involving alcohol at the Delt house, you clearly paid no respect to the probationary conditions that had been set forth by Quincy University. Therefore, based on the parameters of your probation, the next step is to remove the privilege of living in the 2006 Lind Street residence. Although this was a step the University had hoped to avoid, you have given us no choice by the actions that you have chosen to display in the recent months.

If you have any questions or more information about the matter at hand, I would be happy to meet with you. However, in the mean time, each member who was planning to live at 2006 Lind Street for the 2009-2010 academic year, must stop by Student Affairs to speak with Heather about switching their housing. If you have not made other arrangements for 2009-2010 housing by May 15th, your new housing arrangements will be chosen for you.

Sincerely,

Crystal Sutter
Director of Student Development

Cookbook

I am sure many of you have heard about the upcoming cookbook. The idea was brought up by Brother Kyle Leonard to create a cookbook to raise money for the chapter. So if you or a family member has a recipe they are willing to part with please e-mail them to the chapter's e-mail address qudelts@hotmail.com so we can forward them to Brother Leonard.

2009 Leadership Awards

Quincy University held their 21st annual leadership award ceremony on May 5th and Iota Delta is proud to announce the following awards were awarded to different brothers. Junior member of the Pi class Jacob McGuire was awarded "Most Philanthropic" for the chapter. Jacob is the service and social chairman for the chapter and has been involved in many service projects around campus and has provided the chapter many service opportunities. Jacob most recently went on a mission trip to New Mexico. Kevin Hahn was awarded in "Academic Excellence" for having the highest GPA in the chapter. Kevin is a freshman member of the Sigma class and currently serves the chapter as Risk Management and activities chair. He was also given an award from Student Senate. Also receiving a non-chapter award was Kyle Leonard. Finally, to wrap up the awards the chapter named their choice for "Delt of the Year." This honor was given to freshman member of the Sigma Class Dan LaRocco. LaRocco is currently the Secretary, Parliamentarian, and on the Alumni Committee.

A Year in Review

The academic year started off with high hopes of bring in new men to our historic fraternity, and did not fail. Although, the chapter did hit a bump in the road in the middle part of this academic year, the chapter managed to add some key components to the future success of our chapter. In the Fall Rush, the chapter initiated the Sigma class which included three freshman and two juniors. Those men were Bill Filipiak, Tim Miller, Kevin Hahn, Jarad Magurany, and Dan LaRocco. Filipiak, Miller, Hahn, and LaRocco quickly stepped into executive board positions. Filipiak serves the chapter as Sergeant at Arms, Miller as Treasurer, and LaRocco as Secretary. Magurany the last member of the class serves the chapter as Pledge Educator. Many of the brothers found the time to participate in other activities around campus and mission trips also. With the successful Rush the chapter was delighted to hear that they not only the highest GPA amongst all Greek organizations on campus. The elections in November brought to the chapter huge changes having only two executive board returnees. Mark Webb was elected President of the chapter Iota Delta, Jake Egelhoff Vice President, Tim Miller Treasurer, Kevin Hahn Risk Management, Pat Moore Rush Chairman, Dan LaRocco Secretary, John Bruzan Academic Affairs, and Bill Filipiak Sergeant at Arms. Hahn and LaRocco are currently finishing their freshman year. With new changes and a positive attitude going into the Spring semester the chapter added seven men welcoming Tino Mirabelli, Ivan Shirkov, Mike Varrone, Ken Medo, Brian Silverstein, Adam Barr, and Baxter Grace to the chapter. Also in the Spring the chapter sent Mark Webb, Jake Egelhoff, Kevin Hahn, Tim Miller, Pat Moore, Dustin Gorder(Alum), and Ryan Schumacher(Alum) to the 2009 Northern Division Conference. In the tail in of the semester, the chapter held a successful Bags Tournament in the Health and Fitness Center raising over $600 for the chapter. Preview of Chapter Report

Iota Delta is excited to announce the addition of seven new men to our chapter this spring, expanding Iota Delta's active number to twenty-three men. With seventeen expected to return in the fall, Iota Delta is optimistic toward an exciting future as a young chapter. However, Iota Delta’s success does not end there, the chapter is proud to announce that our GPA was the highest among all Greek organizations on campus, registering a 3.09 GPA for the fall semester of 2008.

The chapter has also been involved with various activities around campus. This includes five varsity athletes participating in tennis, golf, and volleyball. We also have several Student Senate members, Mock Trial participants, Pre-Law Club members, a number of members involved in Resident Life, as well as a number of writers for the school newspaper, The Falcon. Many of the brothers have also found the time to help with the mission trips offered by our Campus Ministry, going to places like Haiti, New Orleans, Virginia, and New Mexico. Iota Delta has participated in various service projects such as helping various organizations set up their events that involve working the Universities Presidential Inauguration, helping with blood drives, cleaning up local parks, and participating in the local Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program. Iota Delta also held a kids day where local children could come and play kick ball and other fun activities. Along with some of our service work, the chapter also held a successful fundraiser, which stabilized the chapter financially.

Urbane Brothers

One of the events Iota Delta has brought back is formal days. Every Monday after a formal chapter the brothers will go around campus in a dress shirt, tie, dress pants, and other items of choice. The idea brought up in chapter was quickly agreed upon and formal Monday’s will occur once a month in an attempt to appease the want of the campus.

Central Office Visits Chapter

Just recently the Iota Delta Chapter was visited by members of central office to help better organize the future plans of the fraternity. Ken Herman met with all the brothers throughout this week and asked them a few questions about their position and how they go about managing their roles. On the same weekend the brothers also had a retreat at the Camus Ministry building with Ken Herman and Chris Wisbrock. Chris and Ken got most of the brother brain storming about goals they would like to set for the future. An overall good time the brother gained a lot of knowledge to move forward as a chapter after a bit of a slump we have found our selves in. Some of the goals the brothers have set are to improve alumni relations, continue to hold a high academic standing, create committees, be more organized, and continue to the service work. The chapter in the upcoming weeks will reexamine these goals to see the progress they have made.

Chapter Initiates 7

The chapter is proud to announce the Alumni of our successful spring rush. Iota Delta initiated seven new men to our fraternity. Each member of the Tau class seem to have found an active role around campus, and still managed to find time to rush. The chapter initiated 2 Seniors, 1 Junior, 1 Sophomore, and 3 Freshman. Our two seniors are Brian Silverstein and Tino Mirabelli. Brian is the Resident Director of Padua Hall, an editor for the school newspaper The Falcoln, member of the QU Tennis team, and does some work for WQUB. Tino is active around campus as a member of the Men's Volleyball team, Mock Trial, and has taken an interest in theatre. The one junior we initiated was Ivan Shirkov who like Tino is a member of QU Volleyball team. Ken Medo is the lone sophomore from the Tau class, Ken is a Student Ambassador, and is very active with the campus ministry. Rounding out the Tau class is Mike Varrone, Adam Barr, and Baxter Grace. Baxter is teammate with Brian on the QU tennis team bringing Iota Delta varsity athlete count to 6 men. Mike has taken interest in many areas around campus such as working for WQUB, writing for The Falcoln, and he has found many other ways to contribute around campus. With the Tau class Iota Delta now stand at 23 actives with 17 expected to return in the Fall.

Iota Delta Holds Successful Fundraiser

On Sunday April 19th, Iota Delta hosted a bags tournament where the chapter hoped to establish some financial stability. Although the weather was nasty, and the intended surface was wet, the chapter did not quit. In the clutch, the chapter moved what would soon be a successful event to the QU Health and Fitness Center. The idea brought up by Brother Tino Mirabelli (Tau Class) became a success raising over $630 for the chapter. Brother Mirabelli did a good portion of the planning for the event where various members of the QU community came to display their bags skill, and in the end Iota Delta's own duo of Jake Egelhoff and Kyle Leonard were victorious taking home the top prize. The chapter had received donations from local businesses such as The Abbey, TGI Fridays, Buffalo Wild Wings, and County Market. The chapter was so impressed by the success that we are now looking into making this an annual event.
